| The site of the concert |
On
the bus back to New Haven Saturday evening we noticed people gathering on
Evergreen. It came to us there was going to be a concert . After we got off the
bus , though with big suitcases we bought , we decided to join in.
We
saw police cars and mobile restrooms parking on the edge . Policemen were here
and there . On the meadow there was a huge crowd of people . It was the greatest
number of people we have ever seen since we came to U.S.A. We found a little
space among the crowd and got settled.

| The audience at the concert |
The concert began at about half past seven. Far away from the stage, I
could not see any performers at all. Looking around , I found people enjoying staying
together as a group more than listening to music. Maybe the outdoor
concert is an occasion for gathering. Next to us lay a couple in love, with
snacks in bags . Behind us were a big
black family with at least four daughters ranging in age from fifteen to three
years old. The mother of the family seemed to meet a lot of friends. She embraced
them and talked in high spirit. Right in front of us were a group of friends
having picnic. They drank beer, ate snacks. Far away in front of us, a big
white umbrella stood high, just in our way. When we looked in the direction of
the stage , what we could see was the umbrella. No one seemed to care. The
performers were singing hysterically, while the audience enjoyed themselves in
their own way.
Of course, sometimes the audience would respond to the singers by
singing together. I saw a young garbage collector dancing around to the music, shouting “Recycles” all the way. However, on
the whole the outdoor concert seemed
casual and informal.
